Research on the Intelligence of Dogs

Dogs have been man’s pets since the Stone Age and with their close association to man, research has shown that just like people, dogs also think.
In one of the researches conducted it was established that digs have a mental ability of close to that of a child of about two years and therefore capable of thinking like one.
The findings show that dogs can learn up to at least one hundred and fifty words where signals are included and some can count up to four or five. It also showed that they have an understanding on some arithmetic.
Additionally, just like little children, some dogs clearly tried to deceive their playmates. This reveals their intelligence to try and trick someone for your own advantage.
In that research it was discovered that border collies were the most intelligent breed followed by poodles, German shepherds, golden retrieves and dobermans coming at position five. Hound dogs were found to be the least intelligent breeds in the list of more than 100 breeds.
Another indicator for the high intelligence of dogs is their memory and sense of time. More specifically, if dogs live on a regular schedule, they will know exactly what to expect and what will be done at what time. They seem to memorize those schedules.
Moreover, dogs have an understanding of who the boss is. When dogs perceive a person as being higher in rank than they are, they always obey him but when they consider themselves ‘better’ than somebody then they don’t obey their commands. This is why most people abandon the dogs they consider stubborn.
With that being said, if taught well, dogs will understand many commands that their master wants them to perform: Sit, down, stay, and go are the most common.
Dogs not only understand commands but also the mood of people. They have a very good sense whether someone is happy or sad. In addition, well trained dogs have a great understanding of different places: Places where they are allowed to be and places where they are not allowed to be.
